Meet the MC and Curator
Long ago, in a valley where wind rehearsed its strength every afternoon, a young tree asked the ground what it should become.
“I want to be tall,” said the tree. “I want to touch the sun and be seen.”
The ground replied, “Then begin where no one is looking.”
The first season, the winds came early and sharp. They bent the tree until its leaves scraped the earth. Frightened, the tree pushed its roots outward, not down, but wide. It reached sideways into the soil, learning the names of neighboring stones and the patience of moss. When the wind returned, it found the tree harder to tip. The tree learned its first lesson: to stand, you must belong to more than one place.
The next season brought drought. The wide roots found only dust and old promises of rain. Thirst gnawed at the tree, and it reached again, this time downward. Past cool layers of silence, past the memory of rivers, until it found water hiding in the dark. From then on, even when the valley cracked with heat, the tree drank calmly. The second lesson took hold: what sustains you is often buried beneath discomfort.
Years passed. The soil grew poor. What little nourishment remained was scattered, hard-won. The tree’s roots thickened, slow and deliberate, swelling where effort met reward. They learned to hold onto fragments of goodness and make something lasting from them. The third lesson settled in the wood: strength is not speed, but accumulation.
When the greatest storm finally came, the one the valley still speaks of, the wind howled with confidence. It toppled trees that had grown fast and narrow, proud and hollow.
But this tree stayed.
Its roots were wide enough to share the burden of the wind, deep enough to endure thirst, and thick enough to feed a long life. Above ground, it was tall, yes, but not because it had rushed. It had listened.
And so the fable ends with a truth the ground keeps repeating:
What holds you upright is not what others see.

History of TEDx
TED is more than one event and more than a YouTube Channel – it represents a movement in education, thought, and innovation leadership. Since 1984, leaders have gathered to discuss three broad topics: Technology, Entertainment, and Design. They convene to listen, challenge, and promote “ideas worth spreading”.
The “x” denotes an independently organized event that is licensed by TED. In 2009, the transformational leadership of TED was extended to local organizers wanting to engage their unique communities in thought and to inspire action. Over 40,000 TEDx events have been organized around the world. This year, TEDxSpokane is one of as many as 4,000 global TEDx events. Over 100,000,000+ TEDx talks have been uploaded to the World Wide Web.
Every week, in over 150 countries, people gather to hear, see, feel, and chase these ideas through TEDx events. The fantastically simple concept is to create an immersive environment where prominent local organizations, thought leaders, and key influencers from disparate industries and unlikely places can rub their minds together to draw inspiration. This mélange of partners, speakers, and influencers make up the community of change-makers that we are trying to inspire throughout our Spokane region.

A Letter From The Founder
Welcome to the 14th annual TEDxSpokane!
This year’s theme — ROOTS — invites us to explore the foundations that shape who we are, where we come from, and where we’re going.
Our roots ground us, in identity, in culture, in community. They connect us to history, to heritage, and to the stories that have carried us to this moment. In times of rapid change, returning to our roots can offer clarity, resilience, and direction.
Today, our speakers will dig deep. They’ll share ideas that challenge, inspire, and illuminate the many ways roots influence our personal journeys and our collective future. From ancestral knowledge to innovative growth, from healing past wounds to planting seeds for tomorrow, this stage is where it all takes shape.
Let’s listen with intention, reflect with openness, and leave today feeling more connected, to ourselves, to each other, and to what truly matters.
Welcome to TEDxSpokane 2024, celebrating 14 years of ideas worth spreading.
May today be a grounding force and a launchpad for growth.
It’s time to TED.

Mission
To design, produce, and support the annual TEDxSpokane conference. Northwest X Talks serves as an agent for talks, speaker series, and other venues for “ideas worth spreading”.
Vision
Northwest X Talks (NXT) is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization dedicated to creating and implementing community events (including the annual TEDx Spokane Conference) designed to engage all aspects of our Greater Spokane regional community in ideas and conversations that matter.
NXT’s primary focus is to ensure the quality, integrity and success of the TEDx Spokane Conference events held annually in Spokane. NXT serves the Spokane TEDx Conference and related events by offering event design, organizational, logistical, technical, and financial support; including serving as the fiscal agent for TEDx Spokane Conference.
The NXT also encourages other technology, entertainment and design events in Spokane, offering support and volunteer services where appropriate.
Impact
For 13 years TEDxSpokane has given a podium to more than 150 speakers and ideas worth spreading. In 2012, Jamie Tender, Head of School at Saint George’s School, attended TED Global in Scotland. That same year, Jamie was awarded a TEDx site license and TEDxSpokane hosted our first live event featuring 15 speakers, “Creativity, Action and Service.”
For the first 5 years of the conference, Saint George’s School served as host and major contributor to our local TEDx event. In May 2017 the TEDxSpokane planning team started the non-profit Northwest X Talks to elevate and celebrate “an institutional and global quality event” given to the community by Jamie Tender and Saint George’s School.
Today, TEDxSpokane is an annual event held in Spokane and is organized by volunteers from across the Inland Northwest. We are excited to continue to provide an opportunity for growth again this year through a license from TED to share and discuss ideas that help our community grow and seek to improve our world.
